Eye Allergies

Eye Allergy Treatment with Omni Eye Care Center

Eye allergies affect many people. Between season changes, pollen, dust, and pets, it’s easy to get itchy eyes from time to time. If you have ongoing allergy issues, however, Dr. Mark Taroyan OD at Omni Eye Care Center can help.

If your eyes are getting red and puffy, you don’t need to live with weeks of aggravation. Modern optometry has come a long way, and understanding the ins and outs of eye allergies can help you stop the irritation for good.

It can be tough to tell if your itchy eyes are suffering from eye allergies, so you must be aware of the symptoms. Eye allergies can be spotted by redness in the whites of your eye. Redness in the inner eyelid also indicates eye allergies. Beyond this, the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology suggests looking for the following symptoms:

  • Constant eye itching
  • Constant tearing up
  • Blurred vision
  • Swollen eyelids
  • A constant burning sensation
  • Sensitivity to light

Of course, the only way to know for sure if you have eye allergies is to visit Dr. Taroyan OD for a checkup.

What Causes Eye Allergies?

Several things can cause eye allergies. Your eyes are exposed to allergens every day. Pollen, pet danger and dust can aggravate your eyes over time. As per the American Academy of Ophthalmology, your eye cells, called mast cells, release histamine and other chemicals when they come into contact with these allergens.

When this happens, they release several chemicals which cause inflammation. This results in itching, watering and redness. It can be tempting to rub or scratch your eyes, but you should avoid doing so. This can make the swelling worse, releasing more itch-causing eye chemicals.

Treating Eye Allergies

If you think you have a case of eye allergies, you should keep your eyes as moist as possible. If you wear contacts, take them out. Remove any eye makeup. Apply a cool, wet cloth over your eyes. Make sure you wash your hands often, too, because dirty hands can spread more allergens.
